Name:
FLYING
FISH?
Time:
c. AD 200 - 400
Location: Calima Culture, Columbia, South America
This unique and attractive figure has been the subject of heated controversy
for 30 years. The original was made by artisans in the jungles of Columbia
about 1600 years ago. Beautifully crafted in a gold alloy called tumbago,
it was intended to be worn as a pendant. Archeologists generally believe
the figure represents a stylized flying fish as are found about 100
miles off the South American coast. While the figure is very similar
to these fish, some aspects, particularly around the tail, are significantly
different. In 1968 Eric Von Daniken published the controversial book
"Chariots of the Gods?" which speculated about ancient astronauts
visiting South America. In a follow-up 1972 book, "The Gold of
the Gods", Von Daniken shows a picture of a gold flying fish pendant
which he believes represents a airplane used by outer space visitors.
Our piece is an exact recreation molded directly from the original piece
auctioned by Sothebys. Whatever you choose to believe (and note
the figure itself is smiling) enjoy wearing an ancient but stylish mystery.
