BIRD OR ANCIENT DINOSAUR?
Time: Jurassic Period, 150 Million Years
Location: Southern Germany
Unearthed in 1861, Archaeopteryx lithographica has been the subject of study, discussion and controversy for over 139 years. This fossil cast is an exact replica of the famous Berlin specimen, unearthed in the Solnhofen Limestone deposit in southern Germany. You can easily see the impressions of feathers preserved in the stone which would clearly indicate that Archaeopteryx was a bird. However, you can also see the long bony tail, sharp teeth and other skeletal characteristics that identify Archaeopteryx as a dinosaur. Today, in the 21st Century, the heated controversy surrounding this beautiful enigmatic creature continues.
