DOG

c. AD 1500
Location: Central Mexico
According to some experts, this cute little pet may be Ahuizotl, named
for a despotic Aztec emperor who reigned from AD 1486 to 1502. The emperor's
insignia sported a mythical beast who was believed to live in a lake,
imitating human distress cries to draw rescuers. The beast would grab
the rescuer's hand and pull him in. The body would resurface three days
later without eyes, teeth, or fingernails, the flesh-eating beast's
favorite delicacies.
